Clare Balding is the face of BBC sport and an all round national treasure. The What I See project interviewed her about her life and career. You can watch the entire interview below but here are five of our favourite pieces of Balding wisdom:
- Look for your role models: when Balding started in broadcasting she never worried that being a woman in sport would be a problem because there were already women, like Sue Barker, doing it. They pave the way so you can follow in their footsteps.
- It’s not about the money: Balding turned down a better paid job in racing broadcasting in order to go to the Atlanta Olympics with the BBC. It changed her career and took her out of a niche.
- Don’t let fear of failure hold you back: Women can hold themselves back because they’re afraid of failing. We all make mistakes, but it’s about picking yourself up and learning from it.
- The last thing you should do is look in the mirror: it’s easy to believe that it’s all about you. In fact satisfaction comes when you turn your gaze outwards and think about the team, the business, the lives you are affecting.
- Focus on one thing: slow your brain down and find one thing, be it music, sport even video games, which makes you concentrate. This is where happiness comes from.
