CHACHONEGSAO: Five people were killed and five others badly injured, including a pregnant woman, when two pickup trucks collided head-on in Bang Pakong district late on Sunday night.

The fatal crash occurred about 9.30pm at Rang Tasorn curve on the Sukhumwit-Sai Kao Road in tambon Song Khong, said Pol Capt Manit Boontaeng, deputy investigation chief of Bang Pakong police.

When police and rescue workers arrived at the scene, the two wrecked vehicles were blocking the road -an overturned black Mitsubishi pickup and a white Toyota pickup, both with Bangkok licence plates, Thai media reported.

Four people were found dead, trapped inside the black pickup. Another man was lying injured on the road.

The dead were identified as driver Apichart Wanarat, 31; Ms Sasinat Lertsuwan, 30; Ms Pimpisa Lertsuwan, 31; and Mrs Patamporn Lertsuwan, 57. The injured man was  Piyawat Pliansiri, 35.

One man was found dead inside the white pickup, along with four seriously injured people.

The dead man was identified as Pitak Saengnak, 23, a passenger. The four injured were driver Natthaphol Jaiyod, 27; his wife Nisa Sonmang, 32; 9-year-old boy Natthakul Jaiyod;  and Jintala Neelakhon, 23, who is months pregnant and the wife of the dead man.

All victims were retrieved from the wreckage and the injured were rushed to Bang Pakong and Chularat hospitals.

Mr Piyawat, the only survivor from the black Mitsubishi, told police they were on their way home with less than a kilometre to go when a white pickup travelling towards them suddenly veered across the road and  hit them head-on.

Police were investigating.
