Five Instagram accounts to follow for vintage interiors inspiration

If you love leafing through interiors magazines of yesteryear, these five Instagram accounts totally get you – whether you’re into sleek 60s mid-century style, the iconic colour schemes of the 70s, extravagant 80s decor or pastel-hued 90s nostalgia (or, all of the above).

While wildly different in design, one thing these decades have in common? All the imagery was shot on film, making everything instantly more aesthetically pleasing – yup, even the flamboyantly frilled bedspreads.

And whether you were around in these eras or not (or find yourself mentally making a note of what not to do, rather than feeling inspired) here’s one thing we can all learn: it’s important to style your home in a way that brings you joy, right now.

Because no matter how stringently you follow a current trend, it’s bound to look dated or a little ‘WTF’ when you look back.

So here are five reshare accounts who carefully curate, scan and share interior images from a bygone era – all for your viewing pleasure.

@the_80s_interior

Curated by Londoner Simon Knight. What started with a simple upload of Brent Cross shopping mall in the 1980s has escalated into 371k followers and a line of merch.

The winning formula? Empty interiors, no people and humorous captions.

@neontalk

One of the biggest (and best) ‘new retro’ aesthetic accounts, and with good reason.

Each carefully curated image – covering fashion, film and interiors from the 80s and early 90s – has a low-fi, soft focus feel that somehow looks oh-so right now.

@1960bham

This account was created as a place to share the vintage interiors inspiring the renovation of their Birmingham-based, mid-century home.

@70sworship

There are plenty of 70s-inspired interiors accounts on Instagram, but this one encourages us all to embrace our inner maximalist.

As you’d expect, carpeted bathrooms and sunken living rooms feature very heavily on this colour coordinated feed.

@architectural_indigestion

Come for the clever Instagram handle, stay for the amazing edit (or ‘degustation’) of Architectural Digest spreads, quite specifically from 1977 to 1986.

So chintzy, you can almost smell the potpourri from here.
