Five Houston police officers shot, injured; suspects dead

Five police officers were shot in southeast Houston Monday afternoon while responding to a call.

All five officers were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, according to the Houston Police Department.

The officers were hit during gunfire in the residential neighborhood. Two of the five are in critical condition, according to the Houston Police Officer's Union. The other three are stable.

One officer was shot in the leg, one in the shoulder and one in the face, according to KHOU.

Two suspects died in the exchange, with one other still inside the home, sources told the TV station.

"This evening's horrific attack on police officers is a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement.

"The city of Houston and the Houston Police Department will have whatever state resources they need to bring swift justice to those involved. I ask all Texans to join Cecilia and me in praying for the officers injured, and for the continued safety of all law enforcement officers who protect our communities."

SWAT officers were on the scene.
