Five Greater Manchester boroughs are to get extra government covid support this winter, reports claim

Five Greater Manchester boroughs are to get extra government support to combat coronavirus this winter, reports claim.

Bolton, Rochdale, Manchester, Oldham and Tameside are among 20 local authorities which have been classed as areas of 'enduring transmission', Sky News reports.

It means they could 'receive a tailored package to support them until potentially March 2022', the broadcaster says.

Bolton is one of four areas set to receive help from October 22, while extra support could be given to the other 16 places from November 5.

Manchester, Bolton and Oldham have all had the highest covid infection rate in the country at times during the pandemic.

Bolton was hit hard by the Delta variant when it first began spreading in the country earlier this year.

That led to the town having local lockdown measures imposed.

Infections were rife in Oldham at the beginning of the pandemic, while Manchester became a hotspot when students returned to university in September 2020.

Of the 20 areas 12 are in the North of England, Sky News reports, including Hyndburn, Preston, Burnley and Blackburn with Darwen in the North West.
