Kilmarnock is poised for five digital advertising hubs to be planted in the town centre.
BT street hubs are marketed as the phone boxes fit for the 21st century with free ultrafast Wifi, free UK calls and USB charging.
The giant advertising boards, towering at just under 3m tall and 1.2m wide have been already rolled out to various cities around the UK.
Four of the hubs have been approved for the town centre at the following locations: Kilmarnock cross at the footpath outside Stewart Travel; the footpath outside Boots on King Street; the footpath outside the former Howard Arms at Glencairn Square; and the footpath outside Rambo Turkish Barbers next to the town's new mural on Titchfield Street.
One other application for a hub, based at the footpath on Portland Street across from Mason Murphy, has yet to be ruled on and is under consideration from East Ayrshire Council planners.
The HD screen will change every 10 seconds with the promise of commercial content and a "wide range of local community and council content" with 876 hours of free council advertising each year.
Powered by renewable carbon-free energy, air quality and CO2 sensors are also fitted into the multi-functional units.
The application states that the hubs will "help in the achieving the advancement and decluttering of the council's streetscapes."
Kilmarnock town centre has been dogged with anti-social behaviour in recent times but BT promise the units will be monitored 24/7 with weekly inspections and a minimum of bi-weekly cleaning services.
In addition, all units will be fitted with a direct 999 call button for emergency situations.

"The free digital services provided by our Street Hub units can play an important role in helping to revive the UK's high streets following the pandemic.
"We are working closely with local councils and communities to introduce the new units to more parts of the country, enhancing the UK's future digital infrastructure, and bringing benefits to residents, businesses and tourists alike."
