Free agent forwards Newcastle could target to supplement Callum Wilson's goals

The summer transfer window is open and Newcastle United are on the hunt for players to strengthen their squad.

After last season's 12th-place finish, Newcastle's recruitment team are already hard at work trying to establish a list of targets for United in the summer transfer window, although the financial implication of another season impacted by COVID-19 will have a stark impact on spending right across the Premier League.

The Magpies will be in the market for free agents and with the lack of alternative to Callum Wilson's guarantee of goals up front proving to be a problem in his absence this term, we have trawled through some of the best potential free transfers Newcastle could make up front.

Vincent Aboubakar (Besiktas)

The Cameroon international signed a short term deal with Besiktas on a free transfer from Porto last summer and has proven to be a revelation in Turkey.

The 29-year-old has scored 16 goals in 29 appearances to help inspire his side to the brink of the Turkish Super Lig title and could be worth a gamble for a side in any of the major European leagues this summer.

Olivier Giroud (Chelsea)

Newcastle were keen to sign Giroud on loan during last season's January transfer window, only for the French international to enjoy a renaissance under Frank Lampard.

The 34-year-old has rarely featured under new manager Thomas Tuchel, though, and all the signs point towards him leaving Stamford Bridge on a free transfer this summer.

He has still found the back of the net 10 times this season, though, and has scored some important goals - particularly in the Champions League.

The World Cup winner would still be an astute signing for most top flight clubs on a short term deal.

Andre Ayew (Swansea)

Ayew's future may well depend on what division the Swans end up in next season.

The 31-year-old's 31-goal haul across the last two seasons have twice helped Swansea reach the Championship play-offs and he will hope he can inspire their return to the Premier League in this season's version.

Nonetheless, failure to do so could spark the end of his four-and-a-half year association with the South Wales outfit and he could be tempted by one last crack at the English top flight.

Siriki Dembele (Peterborough)

Newcastle have sent scouts to watch the Posh hitman this season but they have an option to extend his current deal.

The 24-year-old's 12 goals and 12 assists this term helped fire Darren Ferguson's side to promotion from League One.
