Five food challenges families can do at home with the kids

With time away from family and friends, parents have been coming up with all sorts of ideas to keep children busy in lockdown.

There's been den making, hair dying, baking, you name it.

But with kids still unable to meet up with groups of friends, you might be finding it increasingly difficult to keep them entertained.

That's why we've come up with a list of simple food challenges families can do at home.

We don't mean how much food you can shovel in at once, but there are plenty of fun food games that can be done safely - and they're not particularly messy either.

Just make sure you check products for allergens if you're giving your kids anything they've never had before.

Here's our top five suggestions

Skittles

We say Skittles, but you could do it with other similar sized sweets.

Basically put all the sweets on one plate in the middle of the players.

Each person has a straw and a small bowl. The race is on to see how many sweets you can move from the plate and into your own bowl by sucking them onto the end of your straw.

If you drop one then move it back to the central plate before carrying on.

You can do it for a set amount of time, or until they've all been moved, and the person who gets the most is the winner.

Taste test

You can do this with whatever foods you choose and as many as you like - or you think the children can handle.

We did 10 and included a mixture of sweet stuff, like marshmallows and Vimto flavoured millions - which we knew they would like - and others we knew they definitely wouldn't, including pickles and tomatoes.

If you're using the same foods, then it's best to get the children tasting at the same time, otherwise they'll know what's in store for them.

Make sure they're blindfolded - use a tea towel or an eye mask if needs be (nobody's watching) - so they can't see what they're getting.

Write their names on a sheet and they get a tick or a cross for guessing the item of food correctly.

Have a glass of water handy for in between each item and make sure you don't use anything too disgusting, as I can guarantee the kids will want to turn the challenge on you once they're done.

Trust me, a spoon full of mint sauce followed by a blob of butter is no fun for anyone.

Donuts

This can be done individually or as a team. You just need donuts, some string and a place to hang them.

The idea is to see who can eat their donut the quickest without using their hands.

Or if you'd rather not race, then just see who can manage the whole thing without the timer going.

Adjust the string so it's just above each person's mouth and away you go.

Balancing act

All you need for this one is some dry spaghetti and some marshmallows.

Share them out evenly and see who can make the tallest structure without it falling over.

The winner gets to eat the marshmallows - if they're still fit for eating that is. Or you could have another treat in store for the winner.

What's in the box?

Get a cardboard box and cut a hole in one end of it for the player to put their hand in.

Have the other end open so you can easily move dishes in and out of it.

Again you can use whatever foods you want. Put each one inside a bowl and the player has to guess what they can feel.

Suggestions include jam, beans, cooked pasta, cereal, jelly, whatever takes your fancy.

Let us know how you get on. We'd love you to share your photos of your kids taking part in the challenges on our Manchester Family Facebook page.
