Five flood alerts issued in Scotland as thunderstorms sweep over the country

Five flood alerts have been issued across central and southern Scotland following a thunderstorm warning from weather forecasters.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued flood alerts in Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh and Lothians, Scottish Borders, and West Central Scotland.

Experts say there is a danger of localised surface water flooding issues in some of these areas.

An alert from the government body reads: “Heavy and slow moving thunderstorms and showers may affect the area on the afternoon and evening of Wednesday 8th June.

“Most places will be unaffected, but some areas may see some localised surface water flooding issues, particularly if the heaviest rain falls in urban areas and on or around the transport network.

“Ponding may occur in low lying areas. Flooding from small watercourses may also occur.

“Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.”

News of the flood alerts comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in central and southern Scotland.

Thunder, lightning and heavy showers are expected to sweep over the area from now until 8pm this evening.

As much as 30mm of rain could land in some of the most exposed parts in just a couple of hours, forecasters have warned.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington said: “Slow-moving thundery showers are the driving force behind the weather warning that has been issued.

“There’s a chance of some accompanying lightning and hail, and there could be some difficult driving conditions with a small chance of some localised surface-water flooding due to the volume of rain in a relatively short period of time.

“Some places within the warning area will miss the heaviest of the showers, but isolated spots could see in excess of 30mm of rain in just a few hours.”
