Five fires started by drunken kids rage at same time on golf course

Drunk kids are STILL running rampant on a private golf course.

The Paisley Daily Express previously revealed how Fereneze Golf Club’s fairways had been plagued by groups of up to 100 teenagers.

They were back at the Barrhead course over the Bank Holiday weekend and at least three large blazes could be seen after dark on Sunday.

Bone dry grass and gorse in the rough quickly took hold – and at one time FIVE fires were raging.

Police Inspector Michelle Grant said: “The issues at Fereneze golf course are starting up again, with youths starting fires and the fire service having to be called out.

“All was quiet on Friday and Saturday but unfortunately they were out on Sunday evening. We are working with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on a joint approach to this.

“We will also be working with schools to highlight the dangers associated with setting fires and the consequences.”

Club Captain Bert Holt, speaking yesterday, said the youths started five separate fires on Sunday night, all in gorse bush areas. Bert said: “We have increased police surveillance now, for which we are really grateful, and a few weeks ago they stopped a large group coming onto the course.

“But they cannot support us 24/7.

“I know the police are working with the council and schools to try and see if anything can be done through those channels.”

The situation spiked at the end of March with fires and damage to course furniture including flags at the £800-a-year club in Barrhead.

Bert said then the teens were playing music, throwing debris and leaving behind drinks bottles for greenkeepers to pick up.

He explained: “With the lighter nights golfers will be out on the course, including

women, so it is quite intimidating.

“They literally come from everywhere across the golf course like ants, thanks to social media.”

The fires on Sunday night could be seen from residential streets.

One member said: “I was on the course until around 8pm on Sunday night and had five balls stolen by

neds.

“When is this going to end? I am thinking of cancelling my annual membership.”
