Five festive manicures to add to your December moodboard

It’s almost mid-December, and some of us may already have peaked a little too early — becoming slightly diminished, weary, over-partied and prosecco’d versions of our former selves.

Or perhaps you’re still feeling fantastic: polished, glossy, full of festive spirit and ready for more of the good stuff.

Either way, an excellent manicure feels essential — whether it’s the pièce de résistance of your already-glossy December self or as a chic, efficient way to look a bit more ‘together’ and glamorous when there’s lots to do and little time.

And this year’s December nails are having a moment. They’re more refined, grown up and wearable than the festive tips of Christmases past — think classic, elevated textures, flattering tones and subtle details that will work just as well in the cold light of January. (Unless you do too much washing up over Christmas, that is.)

Here are a few favourites:

Mulled-wine vibes (Instagram: @harrietwestmoreland)

Mulled-wine reds

Deep, spiced, glossy reds are this season’s ultimate festive statement. Sophisticated, timeless, a bit vampy and flattering on every nail length and skin tone, these shades feel luxe but not fussy. Think mulled wine more than candy cane and you’re more than halfway there.

Snow-glazed and fabulous (Instagram @vivianmariewong)

Chrome snow-glaze

These chrome-effect nails deliver a modern, glamorous take on pearlescent polish. Light-catching but understated, they're elegant in any winter (or disco) light and provide a festive look that feels futuristic not frosty. Great for glitter-phobes too...

Chic and discreet (Instagram @betinagodstein)

Minimal silver and gold accents

There are few things prettier than a nude or neutral base punctuated with fine gold lines, arcs or tips. Delivering understated luxe, this manicure adds elegance and gloss without feeling showy. A great option for those who like to be low key, but still want an intentional, festive finish. Also for anyone short on time, as regrowth is wonderfully discreet.

Velvet nails

Velvet-effect polish is having a major moment, transforming nails into thrillingly tactile, lush, light-catching accessories. Deep greens, browns, burgundies and midnight blues all feel decadent, cosy and right for now.

Espresso and dark chocolate

Near-blacks and ultra-dark browns are a clever alternative to classic black polish, which can be hard to carry off. Rich, glossy and warming, these tones feel sophisticated, modern and fun.

Cheetah print

Animal print nails make an unexpected entry into this December's festive manicure menu thanks to Miss Hailey Bieber stepping out with neutral-toned cheetah spots this week. Playful but polished, this print works brilliantly across a range of nail lengths and shapes.
