Five European countries could be added to Scotland's quarantine list today - including Greece and Croatia

Five major European destinations could be next to go on Scotland’s quarantine list - and they could be added as early as today.

Health officials are growing concerned over a spike in cases in Croatia, Greece, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland.

Thousands of Scots on holiday in these countries face the risk of having to isolate for 14 days upon their return to the UK if the changes to the list go ahead.

The UK Government's transport secretary Grant Shapps chaired a meeting to discuss a spike in cases across Europe yesterday.

Mr Shapps is anticipated to make an announcement off the back of that meeting later today, according to Birmingham Live.

The Scottish Government has previously followed the lead from the UK Government when it comes to imposing travel restrictions.

Similar rules on quarantine were applied in Scotland shortly after officials south of the border added Spain and France to the no-go list.

The Guardian reports that government officials are understood to have traced coronavirus cases in the UK that were "imported" by passengers arriving from Croatia.

The number of imported cases to the UK from Croatia is understood to be at a similar level to Spain when it was banned from the safe travel list.

Paul Charles, the CEO of the travel consultancy PC Agency, told The Guardian he believed Croatia would be removed “based on the government’s own criteria”.

The No 10 spokesman said: "We continue to keep these rules under constant review and we publish a list of the countries and territories that we are concerned about. You'll have seen the last update as of last week."

Asked whether Greece and its islands would count as one country for quarantine rule purposes, he added: "As I say, we will continue to keep data for all countries and territories under constant review. We update the list on a weekly basis."
