Five deaths reported in Bristol region and almost 700 cases in 24 hours

Five new coronavirus deaths have been reported in the Bristol region and almost 700 cases in the latest 24 hour period.

Two deaths were reported in Bristol, one in South Gloucestershire, one in North Somerset and one in Bath and North East Somerset today (Tuesday, December 7)

Each death had seen the person test positive for covid within the last 28 days of their life.

Each region reported further coronavirus cases too, with Bristol city reported the highest figure today with 268.

South Gloucestershire reported 201, North Somerset 28 and Bath and North East Somerset 98.

It takes the Bristol area's total to 695 today.

Also today the UK Health Security Agency South West confirmed that two omnicron cases have been linked to a private party in Somerset, with further cases suspected.

It follows claims made on social media by Professor Tim Spector, leader of the ZOE Covid Study, that a “super-spreader event” happened at a private 60th birthday party in Somerset.

More localised data on where the omnicron variant has been found is expected next week.

Breakdown of cases in Bristol region:

Bristol: 268

South Gloucestershire: 201

North Somerset: 128

Bath and North East Somerset: 98

Across the UK, 45,691 cases were reported and 180 deaths were confirmed where the person had died within 28 days of a positive test.
