Five deaths from coronavirus recorded in last 24 hours in Scotland as 289 new cases confirmed

Five people have died of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the Scottish Government has announced.

The latest figures were announced on its official website this afternoon.

The statistics revealed that 289 new cases of the virus have been confirmed overnight.

The death toll since last March is now at 7,619.

There are currently 192 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 21 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic hit stands at 220,782.

A total of 2,593,932 people have received their fist vaccine dose with 479,239 receiving their second jab.

It comes as the first person in the UK received a dose of the new Moderna coronavirus vaccine.

Elle Taylor, 24, from Ammanford, has been given the vaccine at the West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also announced that one million Moderna vaccines have been delivered to Scotland.

Meanwhile, preparations to slowly ease out of lockdown are continuing as the country’s political leaders and medical chiefs have stressed the importance of continuing to remain vigilant.
