Seven dead including two children in Majorca mid-air crash between helicopter and plane

Seven people have died in a mid-air crash involving a helicopter and a small airplane on the Spanish island of Majorca.

The victims included three adults and two children on the helicopter and two local men in the plane, according to the regional government of Spain's Balearic islands, which include Majorca.

Local media reported that the helicopter was on a sightseeing tour and authorities have opened an investigation into what happened.

Part of the wreckage from the aircraft landed near houses in a rural area.

Spain's caretaker prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, sent his condolences to the victims' families on Twitter and expressed sadness at the "tragic accident".

Authorities at the popular holiday destination were called to the incident at around 1.30pm this afternoon near the town of Inca.

The nationalities of the seven victims are not yet known.

Balearic Islands president Francina Armengol said: "We are following with worry the air accident that has occurred in Inca.

“Our thoughts are with the victims.”

Eyewitness reports describe how locals saw dead bodies within the remains of the burnt-out aircraft.
