Ten dead after canyon cracks and crashes onto tourist boats at waterfall

At least 10 people have died after a wall of rock collapsed on top of tourist boats below a waterfall in southeastern Brazil.

The rocks suddenly broke away from the canyon wall and came crashing down on the motor boats, sending out a huge wave over Lake Furnas, near Capitólio.

Nine people were seriously injured in the incident, and today divers pulled the bodies of a further three people from the water.

Horror footage shows tourists shouting as the column of rock smashed into the water.

At least one wrecked boat sank while others managed to speed away.

Firemen, including divers, are currently searching for those believed to be missing.

The victims injured in the accident suffered broken bones and one was in serious condition in hospital with head and facial injuries.

Around 23 others were treated for light injuries, fire department spokesman Pedro Aihara said.

Passengers in other boats are said to have noticed the canyon cracking and desperately called out to warn the other boat.

The area where the incident took place is a popular tourist spot with natural canyons and many hotels and holiday homes nearby.

The region has been under heavy rainfall for two weeks, which could have loosened the rock face.

Yesterday a dike overflowed at an iron ore mine 300 kilometers to the east, cutting off a major federal highway.
