What the Met Office says about forecasts for wintry weather within days

Snow and temperatures of twelve degrees below zero are not on the way, according to the Met Office.

The cooler climate is set to continue into the first week of December when the full force of winter is felt

Minimum temperature maps show Wales, the Midlands and southern areas of England turning light-blue as sub-zero temperatures replace the milder weather we have enjoyed of late.

The Met Office has predicted that it will begin to turn colder on Sunday and then for the week that follows, from Monday, November 22, to Wednesday, December 1, there will be high pressure which will often lie close to western or southwestern parts of the UK during this period.

And it says "snow is likely" across higher ground in the north, possibly falling to low levels at times due to high pressure, but that there is also a 'slight' chance of snow in the south

Its forecast reads: "High pressure will often lie close to western or southwestern parts of the UK during this period.

"This will tend to bring a colder than average north or north westerly airflow for a time. The most unsettled conditions will likely be across northern areas. Here, showers or longer spells of rain are likely with snow likely across higher ground and possibly falling to low levels at times. Strong winds are possible across the north, especially around coasts.

"Further south, it is likely to remain somewhat drier with fewer showers, but there is even a slight chance of some wintry weather here. At points when winds ease any clearer and calmer conditions that prevail will lead to some cold nights with frost and fog."
