Five Covid-19 rules people in Ireland seem to be forgetting

Ireland has been under rapidly changing rules and restrictions since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Following the announcement of the first full lockdown in March, at different times different areas have been under different rules, and it can sometimes be hard to keep track.

Here we have put together a list of five of the most commonly broken or forgotten rules and guidelines that are currently in place right now:

1. Large outdoor gatherings

This is definitely the official Government advice that seems to be forgotten, or ignored, the most.

Official rules state that you are not allowed meet more than 15 other people outdoors.

However as has been seen in many places throughout the country, most notably at the Spanish Arch in Galway earlier this week, far larger numbers are gathering for unofficial events.

2. Work from home where possible

This advice applies to the entire country, but it is most strict in both Dublin and Donegal, where you are asked to work from home "unless absolutely necessary".

However, particularly in the capital, it is clear that a large number of people are still commuting. And while remote working is not possible in many industries, the advice is not necessarily being universally followed in sectors where work from home is possible. As things stand, anyone who has the ability to work from home should do so, in almost all circumstances.

3. Household gatherings

Currently you are allowed have a maximum of six visitors in your home from only one other household. This applies no matter what county you are in.

However similar to the large outdoor gatherings we are seeing, it is clear that there is very little if any strict enforcement of this rule.

4. Pubs and restaurants

According to official Government advice, groups meeting at pubs and restaurants should be from no more than three different households. The maximum number of people at a table is six.

While the six person rule may not be broken regularly, the household rule often is. And although it is technically against the guidelines to have people from four or more different households meeting, it is almost never actually enforced.

5. Stay within your county if under Level Three

People in both Donegal and Dublin have been told to stay within their county unless they need to leave for essential reasons. The same applies for anyone outside the two counties who wants to come in.

However gardai at a checkpoint in Kildare earlier this week reported having to turn a number of motorists home as they were attempting to leave the capital for non-essential reasons, including two drivers who turned "dangerously" to try and avoid the checkpoint.
