I have read all three of E. Nesbit’s famous books about the Psammead and I absolutely love them. The books are so magical and exciting to read and no matter how many times I read them, it still keeps me on the edge of my seat.
Kate Saunders kept the magic and excitement of the original books but added a touch of sadness which made the book outstanding to read. This amazing book is a perfect read for anyone and I would recommend it to everyone. The author has written the book beautifully and it will make you laugh, cry and smile.
Kate Saunders cleverly worked out that the children in E. Nesbit’s Psammead series would have sadly had to endure the horrors of the first world war so that is when she chose to set the book. You see Cyril and Robert fight as soldiers, Anthea finding love, Jane fighting for women’s rights, the Lamb and Edie having their own adventures with the Psammead and lots more.
Five Children on the Western Front has sad elements but Kate Saunders has balanced them out well with upbeat moments, which is another reason why it is a great book. It is hard to stop reading it once you have started because of how powerful and enjoyable the story is.
I would definitely give this book 5 stars and I am sure E. Nesbit would be very proud of Kate Saunders for this amazing book.
