Five children including baby girl orphaned after unvaccinated parents die of Covid
Five children including a newborn baby girl have been orphaned after their unvaccinated parents died from Covid.
Davy Macias, 37, a nurse for Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, was seven months pregnant when she contracted the virus.
After her rapid deterioration, doctors kept her alive using intubation long enough to deliver her youngest daughter - who she never got to hold in her arms.
Her husband, Daniel, 38, died on Thursday after fighting the virus for several weeks as he tried "fighting to stay here with his babies", a family friend said.
Davy's brother, Vong Serey, shared his heartbreak on a GoFundMe page initially set up to support the children after their parents death.
He wrote: "Daniel lost his fight with COVID yesterday afternoon.
"There aren't words to explain the loss of both him and Davy.
"Keep the kids in your thoughts and prayers.
"They gained two angels but still have a long road ahead of them.'
He said the children, including the unnamed newborn girl, are "in good spirits, not understanding the gravity of what is happening".
Mum Davy died on August 26 after giving birth to the youngster, who she never had the chance to hold, the MailOnline reports.
Middle school math teacher Daniel survived another two weeks "fighting to stay here with his babies", the Vong said.
He managed to write a final text message as his breathing failed, telling "anyone [who] is not vaccinated, I suggest you do now".
Last weekend he stopped testing positive for the virus but "the damage has been done" and he died days later on Thursday, Vong wrote.
Davy spent much of the pandemic caring for others who were desperately sick with Covid, before her and her husband tested positive last month.
Both were admitted to hospital and treated in intensive care.
Relatives believe Davy and Daniel, from Yucaipa, California, contracted COVID while on holiday.
Her sister took to social media to reveal the sad news that Davy had died, saying she was an "amazing woman".
Vandana Serey wrote: "My mom and I went to see her one last time on that bed...that's an image that's going to stay with me.
"She touched everybody's life. When she's there, she's an advocate for all of her patients. It's always for the benefit of the patient and the babies. She's a great and an amazing woman."
Davy's brother Vong Serey said about Daniel: "He's the type that would give you the shirt off his back if you were cold, that's the type of person he is. These two people...they are wonderful people."
The couple's oldest child is seven years old.
The GoFundMe page has already exceeded its goal, securing the youngsters - aged 7, 5, 3, and 2 - over $207,000 (£150,000) for their future.
