Five children among the dead in US horror car crash

Five children have been killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a car driving the wrong way on a motorway in northern Illinois, authorities have said. Two adults also died in the wreckage.

The accident is said to have occurred during the hours of darkness around 2am local time on Interstate 90 in McHenry County, about 50 miles north west of Chicago. Lauren Dobosz, 31, of Rolling Meadows, and five children, all in a Chevrolet full-size van, died, according to Illinois State Police. The children were reported to be aged between five and 13.

Jennifer Fernandez, 22, of Carpentersville, was driving an Acura TSX and was also killed in the accident. She was said to have been driving in the wrong direction “for unknown reasons” before striking the van in the westbound lanes of I-90, police said. Upon impact, both vehicles were said to have been “engulfed in flames”. The driver of the van, Thomas Dobosz, 32, was seriously injured.
