Five cheap ways to make your own Christmas decorations and display including tree doors

Christmas can be an expensive time of the year, when you take into account the presents, food and decorations.

But there are ways to cut down on the cost of making your home look truly magical.

Chances are, you may already have everything you need to make your own Christmas decorations at home.

And the best part is, we guarantee the kids will love to get stuck in with the prep.

Price analysis from Finder showed Christmas decorations could cost £176 per household on average.

The costliest items on the list are Christmas trees (£36), LED lights (£20), garlands (£16) and a six pack box of Christmas crackers (£14).

We explain how to make your own Christmas decorations to keep costs down...

Make your own Christmas tree decorations

You can make just about any Christmas shape out of cardboard (Goodfella's)

As long as you have string lying around and some glue, you can make Christmas tree decorations out of just about anything you already have in your home.

Cut up old cardboard into festive shapes - think reindeer and Santa Claus - and decorate with paint or pens before attaching the string.

If you want to make it even more personal, you could stick photos onto the cardboard so your loved ones are featured on your tree.

To save on cardboard, Goodfella's Pizza suggests cutting up old takeaway boxes.

Tina Luo, Origami and paper artist, who makes designs out of recycled cardboard, said: “Creating your own DIY decorations is a great way to add your own quirky spin to the festivities. I’ve loved seeing what I can create from Goodfella’s Pizza boxes. It’s a great way to bring out your inner arts and craft side as well as playing your part in looking after the environment."

Alternatively, you could even cut out fabric shapes from unwanted clothes - although these won't be as sturdy, but you may be able to layer them into festive shapes, like stars.

For a bit of sparkle, you can even hang up old bits of jewellery that you no longer use.

Make your own Christmas tree door

This Christmas chain is an effective way of making a tree (Copyright Not Specified)

Instead of trailing paper chains across the ceiling, Skint Dad recommends using them to make a Christmas tree shape on your door.

To make a paper chain, cut up strips of green cardboard and stick them together, looping each part around the next strip so they form a chain.

This is a great hack for those who don't have the space for a real Christmas tree.

Make your own Christmas wreath

Pom pom wreaths are fun to make (handout)

Pom pom wreaths are a great way to pass the time in the evenings - and you can fashion them with any colours you like.

You'll need a large, wreath-like shape to start with - essentially a thick circle with a hole in the middle.

This will form the base that you'll stick each individual pom pom to.

To make each pom pom, you'll need two smaller cardboard circles - again with a hole in the middle.

Start by wrapping a piece of wool around both circles and tying it into place.

You'll then need to keep feeding the wool around the circles until you've got a thick outer edge - the thicker your wool, the bigger your pom pom will be.

Once you're happy with the thickness, gently cut around the edge of the circles so you're cutting through the wool.

You should then use another piece of yarn to go around the edge of your circle, tightening it and tying it up so your pom pom stays in shape.

Repeat the process until you have enough pom poms to complete your wreath.

Make your own Christmas advent calendar

Making your very own Christmas advent calendar is surprisingly easy - you can do it with toilet roll holders.

Simple glue each toilet roll together to form a Christmas tree shape, and then paint and fill with sweets.

The good news is, you can make it as big or as small as you like - and the gifts inside are personalised.

Make your own Christmas house

Any leftover cardboard can be used to make your very own Christmas house.

Start by measuring out and drawing the four sides that will form the walls of your house and decorate them with pens or paint.

Two of the sides will need to have the characteristic triangle arch that you'll see in the gingerbread example above.

Remember to include little tabs on each side so that you have something to glue each side together with.

Once you've glued and assembled your walls, measure out how the two sides you need for your ceiling, cut them out, decorate and attach.
