Five charred to death in fireworks shop accident at Sankarapuram in Tamil Nadu

KALLAKURICHI: Five people were charred to death and more than 10 people sustained severe burn injuries in a fire accident at a wholesale fireworks shop at Sankarapuram in Kallakuruchi district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday night. The fire engulfed adjacent shops. LPG cylinders in the shops burst, catalysing the fire.

People who have gathered in large numbers at the firework shop to make festive purchase ahead of the Diwali sustained severe burn injuries.

More than 10 people who sustained severe burn injuries were rushed to Kallkurichi Government General Hospital.

Fire tenders from Kallkurichi and Tirukoilyur rushed to the spot.

The whereabouts of a few workers fireworks shop and in the adjacent shops and people, who came to those shops, were not known. Traffic movement in the region was disrupted due to fire accident.

Chief minister M K Stalin expressed grief over the accident and announced a cash relief of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the victims.
