AHMEDABAD: The state reported an average of five cases of rape every day in 2020 and 2021. A total of 3,796 cases of rape and 61 offences of gang rape were registered in Gujarat in the two years ending on December 31, 2021.
Ahmedabad city reported 614 rapes and 15 gang rapes, while the district reported 115 cases of rape and one gang rape in the same period.
The state government, in reply to question in the assembly, said Ahmedabad city and district reported 729 cases of rape and 16 of gang rape. It was followed by Surat (508 rapes and five gang rapes) and Vadodara (183 rapes and 4 gang rapes).
The government stated that 203 persons accused of rape are yet to be arrested. Responding to a related question, minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi said 8,028 cases of crimes against women were registered in Gujarat in 2020.
Taking a potshot at the Congress, Sanghavi said against 8,000-odd cases of crime against women in Gujarat, there 31,954 such cases in Maharashtra and 34,535 in Rajasthan, which have Congress governments.
The government stated that in Ahmedabad city of the 261 cases of rape in 2020, in 130 cases the woman was promised marriage. In 2021, 184 of the 353 cases of rape involved the promise of marriage. About 40 cases in each of 2020 and 2021 involved the criminal use of force.
