Huddle
Founders Andy McLoughlin and Alastair Mitchell have turned their cloud-based collaboration software into a British success story. Huddle allows employees to “get more done” through secure sharing and project management. Customers include 80% of the Fortune 500 and 80% of UK government departments. Not bad for an idea that began life in a London pub.
Mind Candy
The entertainment company was formed in 2004 by Michael Acton Smith, who famously conceived its smash-hit Moshi Monsters brand on the back of a napkin outside a cafe. Its aim is to transform digital entertainment for children and their families but with 80m registered Moshi users, it’ll be some feat to top that.
Buffer
The social media app to drive traffic to a business, increase engagement and schedule posts was the brainwave of Joel Gascoigne. He started the company from his bedroom and now it boasts a flexible team living and working from multiple countries and continents. Buffer now serves two million people every day.
ASAP54
The new breed of fashion e-tailers have to compete in a crowded space, where social referral and “discoverability” are key. Enter the UK-based startup Asap54, which combines image recognition and keyword search to convert moments of fashion inspiration into purchases.
Zoopla
It may now be listed on the London Stock Exchange, but Zoopla began life in 2008 with a simple aim to make information about buying and selling a property more freely available. It is the second most visited property website and is aiming to oust Rightmove from the No1 spot.
