Five best Dublin beaches for a lovely picnic plus two secret ones

Dublin is set to sizzle in 25C temperatures this weekend as Met Eireann has predicted a scorcher.

With the kids out of school, why not head down to the beach for a relaxing day in the sun? Or you could have a lovely romantic picnic by the ocean.

Here we bring you five of our favourite Dublin beaches and two secret ones:

Tower Bay, Portrane

This stunning beach near the small seaside town is just 1km from Donabate.

Just lie back on the sand and enjoy the stunning views of Lambay Island.

Portmarnock

Velvet Strand, which stretches for five miles, is a stunning spot for walking, relaxing and swimming.

The beach and dunes are usually buzzing with people once the first ray of sun arrives.

Sandycove

A tiny, intimate beach just a short spin away from the city.

The shallow water makes it a huge hit with families. But you need to make hay while the sun shines and get there early if you want to find a space.

Dollymount

“Dollyer” is one of the most popular parts of the Northside. Linked to Clontarf by a famous wooden bridge, Dollymount Strand is a 5km stretch of sandy beach.

And it's as popular with people learning to drive as it is with swimmers and walkers. Tip: look out for the kite festival w hich takes place here every summer.

Skerries

Skerries South Strand is a long sandy 2.5km stretch of beauty. This cracking blue flag beach offers spectacular views and is fully life-guarded during the swimming season.

Donabate Beach

This gem of a northside beach is typically less populated with people throughout the summer months.

The 2.5km golden stretch includes lots of exciting activities for the whole family including rock pools, panoramic views of the coastal landscape, is dog friendly and has some lovely secluded dunes where you can eat your picnic in peace.

Kilcoole Beach

Located along the shoreline of Kilcoole, Co Wicklow, this beach is a secluded haven for nature lovers and can only be accessed by foot from a cul-de-sac.

Kilcoole village is more famously known as the fictional village of the 80s television show Glenroe.
