Five arrested over Extinction Rebellion protests are released on bail

Five people arrested after a climate change protest blocked a busy city centre street have been released on bail.

Two men and three women were arrested after the Extinction Rebellion campaign group blocked traffic from passing on Great Ancoats Street, during morning rush hour on Monday.

They were held on suspicion of obstructing the highways and public nuisance offences.

Greater Manchester Police said all five have since been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

Protesters said during the event that they were raising awareness of the illegal levels of air pollution in the city centre.

They also staged the protest to call on the council to cancel plans to create a car park on the former Central Retail Park site, also on Great Ancoats Street, and build a green space in the area instead.

Around 10 protesters could be seen wearing orange overalls and straddling a wooden construction in the centre of the street.
