Five arrested after police called to gunfire in Radcliffe playing fields

Five people have been arrested after police were called to reports of gunfire in Bury.

Officers were called to reports of shots fired at Red Bank playing fields in Radcliffe at around 2.20pm on Saturday.

Two men and three women were arrested at the scene.

People on the playing fields at the time said it was 'full of kids'.

One eye-witness, who asked not to be named, said: "There were two groups of males on different sides of the field.

"It looked like the groups were meeting for a fight. They were calling each other and swearing until a young male dressed in black with a balaclava ran onto the field from Grosvenor Street with something under a red towel.

"As he ran towards the other group of males he threw the towel off and shot the gun. It was too loud to be a pellet gun or an air rifle."

They added: "The field was full of kids. And these two groups were swearing.

"I was sat about seven car lengths from where it happened. I rang the police. Helicopters, dog patrols and armed police were there."

Police say no one was hurt.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 2.20pm on Saturday 30 May 2020, police were called to Red Bank playing fields in Radcliffe, Bury to reports that a gun had been fired.
