Five-a-side football coronavirus rules explained after new Government guidelines issued

Sport has been heavily impacted by the government’s decision to implement a host of new coronavirus measures.

Fans will no longer be allowed into matches at the start of October, posing a huge challenge to clubs who rely heavily on matchday income.

It is not just professional sport to be hit by the new restrictions, though.

Recreational sport has also been impacted with indoor sports no longer being considered an exemption to the ‘rule of six’.

That means any indoor sport with more than six players will be banned - including five-a-side football.

Indoor cricket leagues have also been cancelled as amateur sport comes to terms with what looks set to be a winter of minimal action.

However, outdoor team sports will still be able to take place.

That means five-a-side football that takes place outside can still continue along with other sports.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Johnson stressed that people can still exercise outside.

He said: “We are not stopping outdoor physical exercise, we are not stopping outdoor physical exercise, we are not stopping team sports outside, we want that to continue.”

It means that, for the time being, team sports can continue outside.

Yet those that are found to be breaking the rule of six with indoor sports risk being fined if caught.

Fines for breaking the rule, which limits meetings to six people, have doubled to £200 for the first offence.
