Scarlets issue fitness update on Lions pair who haven't played for seven weeks

The Scarlets have issued a fitness update on Lions duo Liam Williams and Wyn Jones, who haven't played for more than seven weeks.

The pair have injuries and haven’t featured since the Heineken Champions Cup encounter against Sale Sharks on April 4.

Back-three man Williams has a minor foot injury, while the Scarlets say prop Jones has a neck niggle.

They'd already been ruled out of Saturday's date with Ulster in Belfast before the Rainbow Cup clash was cancelled as four home players tested positive for Covid-19.

But both Williams and Jones are expected to be fit for the start of their Lions duties.

"We have two players who won't make any game time before they leave because they have been in the rehabilitation programme," said Scarlets’ interim head coach Dai Flanagan.

"Games have not just fallen right for them with regards timing.

"They have worked hard to get back for this week but they won't quite make it."

Warren Gatland's squad play eight games in South Africa this summer, including three Tests.

They fly out to Jersey for a 10-day training camp before heading into a warm-up against Japan at Murrayfield on June 26, playing their first tour game on July 3.
