Fitness studio owner hits out at 'unfair' government decision to stop classes running

The owner of a fitness studio in Nottinghamshire says it's unfair her classes aren't allowed under tier 3 despite gyms reopening.

Charlotte Stripling, who owns Simply Dance in Carlton, has been told to stop her adult fitness classes and claims the decision is unfair.

The 30-year-old businesswoman, who lives in West Bridgford, is calling on the government to reverse this decision and allow classes to resume for anyone over the age of 18.

She told Nottinghamshire Live: "It's just so frustrating - how can the government open gyms but not allow fitness classes to go ahead? It's completely unfair.

"In our classes, we know exactly how many people are there, everyone is confined within their box to exercise - everything is controlled.

"But in a gym, you are relying on people to clean equipment, everyone is moving around. Classes are actually a lot safer."

She says she doesn't want to see gyms close and has been calling on them to reopen since they were shut last month, but has criticised the government's decision to not reopen classes.

"Covid has had a massive impact," she continued.

"I lost around 50% of my custom in the first lockdown and about 90% of my customers as most people just couldn't afford to support us any longer, which I totally understand.

"I have to have longer gaps in between classes to make sure everything is thoroughly cleaned, and I can only have around 15 people per class."

Charlotte is still able to run classes for anyone under 18, as these are classed as for educational purposes.

She previously ran classes in Radcliffe-on-Trent, but had to stop altogether due to coronavirus, as she previously rented out community halls to use - something has which has been made a lot more difficult during the pandemic.

She added these classes are vitally important for people's mental health, with more people working from home all day making it "even more important to de-stress".

2020 is the ten year anniversary for Simply Dance, which is located in Carlton Hill.
