Fit dad 'died' for six minutes in front of his young son while playing football

A father who 'died' in front of his son during football told how he feels extremely lucky to be alive.

Andrew Barnett, 45, was having a kickabout with his son Seb, seven, outside Eastern Leisure Centre in Llanrumney, Cardiff, when he suddenly collapsed and went into cardiac arrest for six minutes.

He was luckily saved and brought back to life by two leisure centre workers.

Duty manager Ben Clarke ran to his aid with a defibrillator and swimming instructor Sheila Mott joined force to apply the device to Andrew.

Recalling the incident, Andrew told Wales Online : "I was on the half way line and I just face-planted.

"When it happens your just go, it is not gradual. You literally shut down like a car engine being turned off.

"There were no signs, if there was I would have gone to the doctor."

Andrew, who claimed himself fit as a fiddle, trained five times a week, swam three times a week and did weights a couple of times.

Leisure centre worker Ben said he acted 'on instinct' after learning of Andrew's collapse, which happened on December 19, 2018.

"As soon as I got out there I could see he was off colour straight away - he was clearly gone," he said.

Andrew was taken to the University Hospital of Wales after regaining consciousness.

He said: "I don't remember anything about it. The last thing I can remember was my Christmas party which was six days before. All the period between is a blank.

"Thankfully, my lad didn't really know what was going on. They gave all the children chocolate and moved them into the leisure centre."

But Andrew, who works for sports brand Under Armour, could not thank Ben and Sheila enough for saving his life.

To show his gratitude he took them to see Wales' Grand Slam win against Ireland - in a corporate hospitality box.

Ben said: "I have never been to a Six Nations game. I am so thankful! We are going to stay in touch with Andrew.

"Looking back, Andrew's collapse seems so surreal. My wife keeps saying to me 'you saved someone's life'.

"It is a weird feeling."
