'Fit and healthy' mum with no symptoms speechless after appointment

A mum of two who had no symptoms was given a shock diagnosis after a routine appointment.

Ellen Cullen told the ECHO she had always been "fit and healthy" and had run her own exercise classes over the years.

But the 61-year-old said she was shocked when doctors told her they had found cancer in her right breast.

She said: "I went along to a routine mammogram in 2014 and they spotted cancer.

"I had no symptoms, no lump and have always been fit and healthy.

"It gave the girls [Ellen's daughters, Jeannie, 35, and Catherine, 32] quite a shock, they went through a time where they thought they would lose their mum.

"And you do think that, it is so easy at first to think the worst.

"It was an extremely stressful time and there was a lot of anxiety leading up to appointments - it was all consuming during that period.

"I had an operation to take out my lymph nodes and then had radiotherapy.

"That really took it out of me more than I was expecting. I was so used to being on the go, at the time I had even been fostering."

Ellen, from Wallasey, Wirral, said the support of her family, including husband of 37 years John, 80, helped her through recovery along with yoga.

The nan to Olive, five, and Rory, two, said yoga saved her from cancer and set her on a new path.

She said: "After my surgery, I lost mobility in my right arm, so I tried yoga and soon found I was regaining a lot of movement.

"And it wasn't just my arm that was healing. I found yoga had helped me centre myself, helped me let go of the tension.

"It left me feeling stronger within and in my body."

Ellen, who has been given the all clear, was inspired to train as an instructor and now runs her own classes after working in mental health for the NHS.

She now combines yoga with mindfulness and counselling as part of her business Life-Shift

Ellen added: "Yoga changes you from the inside out. My favourite quote is one by Yung Pueblo who said 'I knew I was on the right path when I started to feel peace in situations where I would normally feel tension'.

"It therefore gave me clarity and coupled with lockdown kick-started a period of deep reflection whereby I became clear sighted on what I really wanted to do next in my life - hence Life-Shift was born, and I began to set up my own business.

"I will be forever grateful to yoga for helping me to beat cancer and find my new chapter in life."
