Fisk of Beirut

Despite coming in for a lot of criticism – the relentless scrutiny of rightwing US bloggers led to the term "fisking" – the Independent's coverage (unfortunately you have to pay) of the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister, Rafik Hariri, proves that Robert Fisk remains a brilliant reporter. Those interested in finding out more about the country, and its 15-year civil war, should read his Pity the Nation, one of the best books written about the Middle East.
