Fishing boats rescued after getting lost in heavy fog near Port Talbot

Two fishing boats were rescued after getting lost in heavy fog near Port Talbot on Sunday afternoon.

A volunteer lifeboat crew from Mumbles RNLI was dispatched to locate the vessels at 4.20pm as heavy fog limited visibility to no more than 50 metres.

Both boats were detected quickly using the very high frequency (VHF) computerised radio direction finding equipment on board each vessel and escorted back to their home port of Port Talbot.

Port Talbot lifeboat then assisted both vessels with locating themselves safely in harbour.

Mumbles RNLI lifeboat coxswain Lee Howell said: "Thankfully the skippers of these vessels requested help rather than trying to make way as this stretch of coast can be quite difficult to navigate safely in such difficult conditions.

"We always advise anyone taking to the water to ensure they have a means of calling for help such as a VHF radio or mobile phone."
