Fishing boat skipper who crashed into oil tanker near Ayr passed breath test

Police carried out a breath test on a skipper who pranged into an oil tanker – but it proved to be negative.

The Troon-based trawler Progress banged into the crude oil carrier Decathlon at anchor in Ayr Bay.

The Progress, run by Barassie man Keith Wilson, was damaged in the bizarre incident at 3.55am on May 29.

The Progress was heading to fishing grounds south of the Decathlon – which is 16 times its size – with several other boats when it ploughed straight into the larger ship, damaging its nose and mast installation.

An Ayr police spokesman said: “We assisted the coastguard in Troon following the collision of two vessels at sea.

Officers carried out a breath test which was negative.”
