Fisherman stunned after giant muskrat bursts through fishing hole

A group of fishermen were left stunned when a giant muskrat burst out through an ice fishing hole.

Nicholas James Yohr, 21, was fishing in New London, Wisconsin with the hope of walking away with a Northern Pike.

But when the 21-year-old pulled up the line, a very wet muskrat burst out of the ice.

In a blink of an eye the startled mammal decided to jump back into the frozen water.

The Northern Michigan University student said: "We had a tip up flag go up and assumed a fish had taken the bait.

"When the line was pulled up, surprisingly we found it was a muskrat.

"The muskrat wasn't even hooked. He had bit the bait and did not let go all the way up through the hole.

"We were mainly expecting a Northern Pike and were extremely surprised to see the rodent.

"We never would have guessed it."

Back in 2016 a group of Russian fisherman received a different kind of angling surprise when they pulled their nets out of the ocean.

Amongst all of the fish was a large sea lion.

Sitting upright, the creature simply stared at the startled fishermen, making no move to jump back into the sea.

After a few seconds' pause it jumped back into the sea.
