A fisherman died in hospital after his boat sank off Port William in Wigtownshire on Saturday.
Onlookers alerted the Coastguard around 4pm after the small fishing vessel was driven onto rocks beside the harbour breakwater.
Coastguards and lifeboat crews from the Isle of Whithorn and Stranraer attended the scene. The Port William inshore rescue craft was also scrambled.
It is believed the boat had lost power and dropped anchor off the harbour around 3.30pm but worsening sea conditions and the rising tide combined to drive the vessel onto rocks.
The casualty was rescued and taken to Galloway Community Hospital where he later died.
One eye-witnesses told the Standard: “It wasn’t a trawler – only a wee fishing boat of maybe 25 feet. I saw him heading to the harbour – he must have been planning to come in. He dropped anchor but he drifted onto the boulders.”
