Fisherman attacked after confronting suspected fish thieves

Police are investigating after a fisherman was attacked after confronting suspected fish thieves in Tameside.

The 62-year-old's phone was reportedly snatched from his hand and thrown into the water at Millbrook Dam, in Stalybridge Country Park, before he was pushed to the ground and assaulted.

The incident happened at around 7.30am on Thursday morning.

It's understood the victim, who is a member of Carrbrook Angling Club, went up to the pond to fish.

As he walked around, he saw two men with fish in a bag and asked them what they were doing.

Club chairman Gary Rothwell says the men asked the fisher what it had to do with him, so he told them it was private water and they weren't allowed to take the fish.

As he took his phone out to report what was going on, the men - described as eastern European - grabbed his phone and threw it into the pond.

They then grabbed the victim, threw him to the floor and assaulted him.

Mr Rothwell has been involved with Carrbrook Angling Club since 1999. He says he believes the men's plan was to take the fish home and eat them.

They were both described as being in their 30s and wearing jeans and brown tops.

Mr Rothwell issued an appeal on Facebook to any properties or businesses in the Besom Lane area that may have CCTV showing the men heading to or leaving the dam.

Inspector Andy Holden, of GMP's Tameside borough, confirmed the incident was being investigated as an assault.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
