Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service sent eight fire appliances and an aerial ladder to tackle the fire.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from as far away as Whitley Bay to the north and South Shields to the south.

Today the charred fire damaged building can be seen clearly against the back drop of the River Tyne.

Anyone with any information about the fire should call Northumbria Police on 101 quoting crime number 088670G/21 or visit the force's website.
