Fish Out of Water by Natalie Whipple - review

Natalie Whipple, Fish Out of Water

Fish Out of Water follows a girl named Mika Arlington, who already has her summer planned out, but when her estranged grandmother with her razor sharp tongue turns up on her door step, her dreams quickly flounder down the plug hole. And on top of that, Mika's stuck training her boss's nephew who seems unwilling to do everything she asks.

This book was simply a delight to read and, despite how over clichéd it may seem, I am certain anyone who reads this will be hooked from the very first page thanks to Natalie Whipple's oh-so-perfect witty writing style and array of interesting multicultural characters.

Not only is Mika's tale fluttery and heart-warming, it also manages to cram so many other plots within the main storyline which tackles issues such as racism and arranged marriages. The way Natalie Whipple does this is truly extraordinary and I thoroughly enjoyed each obstacle the characters had to face.

Finally, the comedy within this book was simply golden. I found myself grinning like the Cheshire Cat during some parts of the novel, and even stifling a giggle. It was a good job I wasn't reading this book in public or I would have received some very worried looks.

Overall, Fish Out of Water was a truly wonderful book which will have you giggling, fluttering, weeping and really, really wanting a goldfish! Next time you're looking for something quirky and new to read, this book is definitely the one you should pick up.
