YAMAGUCHI -- Flying fish have invaded Yamaguchi Flower Land in the city of Yanai -- or, more precisely, the garden has been decorated with lanterns in the shape of goldfish.
These red and white lanterns are a traditional folk art of the city.
In previous years, numerous goldfish lanterns were displayed in front of JR Yanai Station and other central areas of the city to coincide with the Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival. This year's festival, however, was canceled due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Flower Land has created a festive atmosphere by hanging about 200 lanterns at the entrance and from the ceiling of the Center Plaza.
With the 7,000 sunflowers in the garden in full bloom, Yoshinari Miyata, head of Flower Land's planning team, said he hopes the bright flowers and distinctive goldfish lanterns "swimming in the wind" will help visitors feel summer.
