Fish and chip shop sells battered Colin the Caterpillar cake as Aldi row rumbles on

A chip shop chain has waded into the middle of the row between Marks & Spencer and Aldi by offering up a battered Colin the Caterpillar.

Papas Fish and Chips, which has branches in Willerby, Bilton and Kingswood, in Hull, was selling the deep fried sweet treats for £1.49 today and giving the profits to the Teenage Cancer Trust, reports Hull Live.

The chippy joked it was taking a stand in support of the supermarket after retail giant M&S launched a lawsuit, claiming it had copied its popular cake with the similar Cuthbert the Caterpillar.

Aldi has brought on board top legal representation after its product was accused of infringing trademark and riding "on the coat-tails" of the competitor's reputation.

Chip shop chain owner Dino said: "It's all a bit of fun and a great way to raise money for charity.

"Like the rest of the nation, we have been gripped by the Colin and Cuthbert saga and we've chosen which side we are backing.

"The battered caterpillars are also absolutely delicious, so we thought why not?"

He added he and his team bought as many mini Colins as they could and battered them in their sweet batter.

Papas Fish and Chips also sent a tweet out to let their customers know about the one time event.

It read: "Sorry @MarksandSpencer we’re backing @AldiUK on this one. #SnitchersGetBattered so we’re battering Colin the Caterpillar in our delicious sweet batter Mon 26th - and all profits go to @teencancertrust

"Ps Charging £1.05 for scraps was also a bad idea #FreeCuthbert #FreeScraps."
