First words as Bolton Wanderers captain Sarcevic joins non league side Stockport in shock move

Bolton Wanderers captain Antoni Sarcevic has sensationally left the club to join non-league side Stockport County.

The 29-year-old, who was in the final year of his contract with the Trotters, has penned a two and a half year deal with the National League outfit.

He's joined County on a free transfer, with no transfer window in non-league, and is available to play against Notts County for the Hatters this weekend.

Indeed he could face off against Bolton next month in the FA Cup after Ian Evatt's side were drawn at home to County in the first round.

The Wanderers boss wished his skipper well and said the club will be looking to strengthen in the January window where possible.

"He did a terrific job to help us secure promotion and then gain an early foothold in League One this time around," said the Wanderers chief of Sarcevic.

“This is a new challenge for him we wish him every success in the future.

“We believe we still have excellent competition for places in the midfield area and this also allows us to look ahead and potentially strengthen the squad in January where we feel necessary if we can.”

Stockport manager Simon Rusk said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have Antoni join the group. During my first conversations with him here, I have already felt his hunger to succeed.

“He is clearly someone with a high level of experience and pedigree from his time in the Football League, which we believe can add to us both on and off the pitch.”

County director of football Simon Wilson added: “We are delighted to bring Antoni to the club, and we all believe we have secured the services of someone with the experience, mindset and quality to further drive the team forward.

“This shows our supporters again that everyone at the football club is relentless in our ambition to together take this club forward, and will not stop.”
