First UK coronavirus arrest as Brit detained in Isle of Man for 'failing to self-isolate'

A man has been arrested and faces a huge fine after failing to self-isolate amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The unnamed British man was detained after arriving in the Isle of Man on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old is the first Brit to be arrested for breaching strict quarantine rules.

He could be jailed for up to three months or fined if convicted, Mirror reports.

The island passed emergency legislation on Tuesday to tackle the Covid-19 outbreak.

On Monday the Isle of Man's Chief Minister, Howard Quayle, confirmed the new measures during a press conference outlining the Government measures to fight the global outbreak.

Anyone travelling to the island must go into quarantine for 14 days.

Health Minister David Ashford said the steps "will ultimately save lives".

Mr Quayle told Tynwald - the Isle of Man parliament - earlier in the week: "We are entering an unprecedented period in the Island's history which requires the Government to mitigate a serious threat to the health of our population.

"We cannot allow our critical health services to become overwhelmed and must have the means to prosecute those who choose to act irresponsibly."

He added: "Protecting the vulnerable in our community is our highest priority and invoking emergency powers will enable us to do so swiftly, as well as acting as a deterrent."
