Tim Burton’s take on Alice in Wonderland might have received almost universally damning reviews on its release in 2010, but it was a notable moneymaker for Disney, earning over $1bn at the international box office.
It was also the film that kicked off the studio’s live-action remake trend that has since spawned such hits as Cinderella, Maleficent and forthcoming takes on Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book.
It makes commercial sense that Burton and his cast are heading back to Wonderland for another effects-filled adventure, and today gives us our first look at Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and the voice of Barbara Windsor return, while Rhys Ifans and Sacha Baron Cohen (playing Time) join the cast.
“This one might be a bit more emotional,” Wasikowska told IGN. “I knew what I was stepping into this time. So there’s a level of comfort going into something like this.”
Alice Through the Looking Glass is released in US and UK cinemas on 27 May 2016.
