First test of summer at Gabba could be replaced by day-night match

Brisbane could lose the opening test match of the summer as Cricket Australia considers a major revamp of its schedule.

Australia will host two three-test series against South Africa and Pakistan later this year.

The opening match against South Africa is tipped to be played at the WACA in Perth.

The Gabba will instead host a day-night test match against Pakistan in December.

The pink ball format was a hit in Adelaide last year with excellent attendance.

In a statement today, Cricket Australia said it was still a draft plan at this stage.

"Piecing the summer schedule together is a complex task that involves many working drafts and is still very much a work in progress, including discussions with visiting cricket boards. We won't be drawn on speculation at this point in time," Cricket Australia said.

However, Cricket Australia has heightened speculation by running a story about the proposed changes on its own website.

If the plans go ahead, Hobart will stage the second match of the series against South Africa, while the third test will be a day-night match in Adelaide.

Pakistan is still expected to play in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and the New Year's Test in Sydney.
