First snowfall of the year in the North East as wintry weather spotted in Northumberland National Park

Winter is definitely coming after snow was pictured on the tops of the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland this week.

This stunning picture of the snowfall was taken on Thursday in Northumberland National Park.

Another image of the snowfall on the hills was captured from Wooler earlier this week.

Snow has already been in higher areas of Scotland but this is the first to be spotted in the North East this year.

More snow could be seen across the region soon though as temperatures continue to drop and the winter weather approaches.

Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue team are now advising the public to be careful as the winter weather sets in.

A spokesperson for the team said: "We are urging the public to be extra cautious as snow begins to appears on tops of mountains.

"The main things that we urge the public to do is to have the right clothes on for warmth but also to have the right experience for if and when more snow appears.

"We also urge the public to check out the adventure smart conditions on the website which can give expert advice. We also suggest to have the correct walking boots, emergency shelter, waterproofs. Additionally we advise that a torch should be packed and that a mobile phone should not be relied on for light, as the cold weather makes the battery decrease quicker.

"We also suggest that the public should check the weather forecast to look at wind directions and to keep an eye on the temperatures.

"Finally, we also want to emphasise the importance that the public should have confidence that they can back-track from the direction they came from and to always let someone know where and where they are going and time frame they are to be out for."
