Britons are facing plunging temperatures after a unusually warm December, with the first snow of the year expected this week.

While the nation enjoyed above-average temperatures in the last month of 2019, January is set to see the mercury drop, with cold weather and showers expected across the UK until the end of the month.

A spokesman for the Met Office also said that there could be snow this week in Scotland.

They said: "There could be snow on Friday across the north of Scotland.

In the evening it will be mostly grey and cloudy. The odd spot of rain or drizzle is possible in southern England. A few clear spells are likely in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, northern and western England.

Temperatures will drop on Friday with some showers in the early morning.

Once the early patchy rain clears south eastern parts of England, Friday will be mostly sunny.

However there will be scattered showers in northern Scotland.

Saturday will be wet in Scotland although Northern Ireland and northern England will be dry and cloudy.
