First snowfall in Scotland as residents wake up to winter season overnight

Scots have woken up to the first snowfall of this year’s winter season this morning.

Large parts of the country were blanketed in the white stuff as forecasters issued a yellow weather warning for Wednesday night.

Around 10cm of snow are said to have accumulated in areas of high ground - but the wintry showers also descended on parts of the central belt and the borders overnight.

The Highlands appeared to be the most impacted by the conditions as heavy snow showers landed on the hills and streets.

Temperatures also plummeted to below freezing last night, with thermostat struggling at lows of around -7C in some parts.

Scots have been urged to take extra care while driving as some icy patches remain on the roads today.

A number of gritters remain on the roads according to Traffic Scotland Trunk Road Gritter Tracker.

And forecasters have warned of further snowfall to hit the country on Thursday night.

North eastern, central and southern parts of Scotland could see around 20cm of wintry showers to batter areas from around 10pm on Thursday.

A yellow weather warning for snow will remain in place until 9am on Friday morning.

Experts have also warned of travel disruption on the western isles as they issue an additional warning for ice.

Hopes of a white Christmas in Scotland were also given a boost yesterday, as forecasters gave an early festive prediction.

The Met Office has indicated that snow could land in Scotland over high ground, with the possibility of it falling to lower levels at some point between December 15 and 29.

A festive white out in Scotland currently has odds of 4/1 according to betting firm Paddy Power.

If snow were to fall on December 25, it would be the first white Christmas recorded in Scotland in a decade.
